Aprilia Tuono 1000R

Aprilia knows how to get our attention. Even before we saw the new Tuono 1000R, we read their assertion, "Here is the machine for the... rider who seeks maximum naked performance." We are talking bikes here, right?

Well, not just any bike. Aprilia is as serious about street ability as it it is about track prowess. And the previous Tuono packed more than adequate punch with great handling. For 2006, it seems the only thing left alone is the name on the tank. Words like "new," "improved" and "better" are used and reused to describe the differences from '05. Most importantly, the new motor is fed air through a dynamic intake (claimed to be the only naked sports bike featuring this), while fuel is squirted through a new electronic injection system. Down 'round the crank, this translates to 133 horsepower (up from 125), with 75-foot pounds of torque peaking at 8750 rpm.

Our Take: Tuono means "thunder," and it's not by coincidence that this bike bears the name.

What can one reproach the VFR 800 V-tec well? Certainly not its rigour. Then, for 2008, Honda could approach the original spirit of its motor bike launched in 1998 and reinforce the links which then linked it with the competition.

The Tiger Boxer 250 RS, the Thai All-Rounder bike

The Tiger Boxer 250 RS all-rounder. Now there's a whishy-washy term. Giving motorcycles labels – sportbike, tourer, cruiser – gives us a mental picture of what we're getting. But the 'all-rounder' badge often suggest a bland compromise that's neither nowt nor summat.

Or it used to. Recently the all-rounders have become leaner and more capable. In Thailand the all-rounder bikes come from Tiger Motorcycle, which manufactures the Tiger Boxer 200 R and the Tiger Boxer 250 RS they offer genuine all-day comfort, practicality and ease of use in packages that can also excite.

Tiger Motorcycle's new Tiger Boxer 250 RS follows the trend for taller, more upright all-rounders. It's based on a perky 250cc single cylinder engine, slim flanks, low weight and firm suspension. It has a roomy riding position and ample pillion space to keep it useable. It even has optional hard luggage.
