Aprilia Tuono 1000R

Aprilia knows how to get our attention. Even before we saw the new Tuono 1000R, we read their assertion, "Here is the machine for the... rider who seeks maximum naked performance." We are talking bikes here, right?

Well, not just any bike. Aprilia is as serious about street ability as it it is about track prowess. And the previous Tuono packed more than adequate punch with great handling. For 2006, it seems the only thing left alone is the name on the tank. Words like "new," "improved" and "better" are used and reused to describe the differences from '05. Most importantly, the new motor is fed air through a dynamic intake (claimed to be the only naked sports bike featuring this), while fuel is squirted through a new electronic injection system. Down 'round the crank, this translates to 133 horsepower (up from 125), with 75-foot pounds of torque peaking at 8750 rpm.

Our Take: Tuono means "thunder," and it's not by coincidence that this bike bears the name.
